In Tunisia, the government is preparing a draft decree on the financing of public health through tobacco taxation.
TAX TOBACCO FOR BETTER ACCESS TO CARE!
Indeed, this draft decree provides for the taxation of tobacco to ensure more financial resources for the public health sector. It provides for a 10% tax on tobacco revenues to finance this project. Moreover, this measure is not new, it is already provided for in article 10 of the 2017 finance law.
As part of this measure, the government will open an account at the Public Treasury called “Public health support account”. This account will ensure the coverage of patients benefiting from access to free care and the reduced rate.
The Council of Ministers, held on March 28, decided to provide additional resources for this account. According to estimates, the resources of this fund would reach 100 million dinars.
Moreover, it should be recalled that the Heads of Government expressed their agreement on tobacco taxation during the participatory dialogue on urgent measures in favor of the public health sector.
