AUSTRALIA: “E-cigarette use reduces smoking among young people! "

With the legalization of e-cigarettes with nicotine in New Zealand, Australian health experts also want to end the current ban. A UNSW researcher, for his part, disputes one of the main reasons for this ban, namely that vaping with nicotine pushes young people to smoke.

NO INCREASE BUT A REDUCTION IN SMOKING AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE

In a letter published in the Medical Journal of Australia, Colin Mendelsohn, associate professor at the University of New South Wales, says recent international reviews show that vaping does not promote smoking among young people - quite the contrary.

« As vaping rates increase in youth, smoking rates decline rapidly "He declares adding" This fact is clearly inconsistent with the claims that vaping pushes youth toward smoking.  »

Around the world, studies show that the vaping experience among young people is short-lived, and that e-cigarette use among adolescents is almost exclusively among those who already smoke.

Colin Mendelsohn explains " that a recent analysis of five national surveys of 60 adolescents in the UK found that less than 0,5% of 11-16 year olds had never smoked "

"Banning wider access to e-cigarettes on the basis of an unproven potential risk for adolescents prevents millions of smokers from being able to take advantage of this risk reduction tool" he said before adding " The best solution would be to use strategies to reduce accessibility for young people and to make vaping available to smokers who are unable to quit with conventional therapies."

The debate has been going on for years now, whether Australia will eventually follow New Zealand in legalizing vaping with nicotine.
