STUDY: E-cigarette, a risk of increased cardiovascular disease.

The use of e-cigarettes could increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and coronary artery disease, warns a preliminary study whose findings were unveiled at a meeting of the American Stroke Association.

A STUDY BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF 400 RESPONSES

The researchers analyzed the answers provided by some 400 000 people who had been questioned about their chronic health problems and their life habits dangerous to health.

The lead author of the study, the Dr. Paul M. Ndunda from the University of Kansas at Wichita, indicates that e-cigarette users, compared to non-users, tended to be younger, have a lower body mass index, and have lower rates of diabetes.

Just under 67 participants reported using e-cigarettes. Compared to others, their risk of stroke was 000% higher, their risk of heart attack or angina by 71% and their risk of coronary artery disease by 59%.

In addition, 4,2% of e-cigarette users reported having suffered a stroke. Health Canada admitted last November that it was concerned about the increasing popularity of vaping among young people.

The most recent survey was conducted in 2017. It shows that 15 percent of Canadians have tried a vaping product. Experimenting with vaping is more common among youth (aged 15-19) and young adults (aged 20-24) compared to adults aged 25 and older.
