The option of a substantial increase is on the table, it could push the price of a pack of cigarettes to 13 euros by 2027.

According to RMC information, the executive is considering a significant increase in the price of tobacco in 2024, with the possibility that the pack of cigarettes will reach 12 euros. The idea of an increase of one euro from next year is being studied. This trajectory could lead to a price of 13 euros by 2027. « Public health specialists are very clear. We must go beyond a few cents to have an impact on consumption », we explain to RMC within the government authorities.
Although the services of the Ministry of Health are in favor of this increase to 12 euros, it is not unanimous. A minister fears that this sudden increase could be perceived « as the end of the last pleasure for the popular classes », he says on condition of anonymity to RMC. Nevertheless, this increase in the selling price could well be one of the resources found in high places to balance the budget.
