HEALTH: France gives in to paranoia and wants to detect lung problems related to e-cigarettes

Worrying but not surprising process! Following the current health scandal in the United States concerning the famous pulmonary pathology which would be "linked to vaping", France has just launched a platform for reporting severe pneumonia in its territory.

FRENCH HEALTH IS SENDING A “BAD SIGNAL” TO SMOKERS!

If the approach seems innocuous and rather honest, it is clear that the launch of a platform for reporting severe pneumonia remains a bad signal to smokers. " Keep on smoking because the e-cigarette is probably dangerous!", This is the message that we can read through the lines a few weeks before the launch of the new edition of" Month without tobacco"

A wind of paranoia coming from the United States? Obviously! Since this summer, e-cigarettes have been at the center of attention after the outbreak of a severe pneumonia epidemic in the United States. To date, 1080 people are believed to be suffering from lung problems, 18 people have died. Among the sick, 80% would be under 35 years and 16%, under 18 years. However, it is the THC (cannabis) oil that would be affected by this tragedy and not the personal vaporizer… But whatever, the precautionary principle resides in the land of human rights!

France is not affected for the moment thanks to its legislation which differs from that of the United States, as the professor explains. Jerome Salomon, Director General of Health: « We are very attentive to the application of the European directive on products containing in particular nicotine and therefore we have the same rules as for tobacco. The fact that the nicotine level is also limited in Europe to 20 mg / ml is an important subject.«

But beyond the effects of nicotine, the suspicions of health authorities are particularly focused on mixtures of substances, additives, additions of flavors or cannabidiol refills containing THC, the psychoactive agent of cannabis.

A VAPOTAGE OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO INQUIRE THE HEALTH AUTHORITIES

Even though the e-cigarette is often recommended as a tool to help with smoking cessation, today more and more non-smoking high school students are vaping and becoming addicted to nicotine by this bias. A situation that worries the French health authorities.

« We have one in two high school students who have already tested and one in six high school students in France, it's exploding, who vapes every day! If it's used, not as a weaning tool, but to get into an addiction, especially if these products contain nicotine, we really have a problem because there is marketing around dyes, additives, aromas and that is really problematic.« , explains Professor Jérôme Salomon, Director General of Health.

As a precaution, the ARS, health establishments and professionals are invited to report cases of suspected severe pneumonia on a dedicated platform.
