On February 13, 2025, the French Senate unanimously passed a law banning the sale, manufacture, and distribution of disposable e-cigarettes, commonly known as “puffs.” The move aims to protect young people from the risks of nicotine addiction and reduce the environmental impact of these devices. Puffs, with their sweet flavors and attractive designs, are particularly popular among adolescents, raising concerns about early initiation to smoking.
Despite the ban, many young people remain skeptical about its effectiveness. Some believe that access to puffs will continue through unofficial channels, including social media. Reports suggest that teens are already considering turning to the black market to obtain the products, which could expose them to substandard and potentially dangerous versions.
At the same time, health authorities are highlighting the dangers associated with these products. The Ministry of Health has highlighted that initiation into vaping increases the risk of switching to traditional smoking. In addition, puffs represent an ecological threat due to their single-use design, thus contributing to electronic pollution.
In response to the ban, some manufacturers are offering alternatives, such as rechargeable e-cigarettes, which are considered more environmentally friendly. However, questions remain as to the effectiveness of the law in deterring young people from using these products and preventing the development of parallel distribution channels.
