UK and Responsible Vaping: ACS Publishes Guide for Post-Disposable

In England, the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has published an expanded version of its ‘Selling E-cigarettes Responsibly’ guide to help retailers prepare for the imminent ban on disposable e-cigarettes, scheduled for 1 June 2025.

Background and Objectives of the Ban

The government measure aims to reduce environmental waste and curb the rise in the use of e-cigarettes among young people. Disposable e-cigarettes, often criticized for their environmental impact and appeal to minors, will be banned from sale from the set date.

Contents of the ACS Guide

The ACS guide provides detailed guidance to help retailers transition away from disposable products. It covers the following areas:

  • Collection and Recycling : Instructions on how to collect used e-cigarettes, store them properly in store and organise regular collections to ensure they are recycled.
  • Identification of Illicit Products : Tips for recognizing non-compliant products by examining packaging and consulting lists of legitimate products.
  • Prevention of Sales to Minors : Highlighting the importance of age verification policies, such as the Challenge25 program, to prevent sales to those under 18.

Support from the Authorities

James Lowman, ACS chief executive, said: “The introduction of a ban on disposable e-cigarettes next year will represent a major change for thousands of retailers who currently stock these products. We have produced this guide to help retailers with this transition and ensure no one is found in breach on 1 June.”

Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh added: “Single-use e-cigarettes are a major source of waste and waste valuable resources, which is why we are banning them from June 2025.”

Resources Available

The full guide, as well as posters to inform customers of the ban, are available on the ACS website.

Conclusion

With the ban on disposable e-cigarettes approaching, it is essential that retailers comply with the new regulations to avoid penalties and help protect the environment and public health.
