Prince Edward Island should better control access to tobacco products, according to Michael Chaiton of the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit.

He was a guest at a conference organized by the Prince Edward Island Tobacco Reduction Alliance. according to Michael Chaiton, tobacco should be treated as a medical problem. He denounces the fact that tobacco is still available in the island province. According to him : " There is tobacco on every street corner. It is available 24 h on 24. It's even more accessible than milk or eggs! "
The researcher advocates stricter regulations with regard to the sale and purchase of tobacco products. Statistics have shown that Prince Edward Island experienced the second largest drop in smokers in the country last year. The proportion of Islanders aged 15 and over who reported smoking increased from 17,3% to 12,7%.
