If Portugal's 2015 budget had included e-liquids in its new tax scheme (view article), the 2017 budget is reversing since a tax relief (of 50%) has taken place.
A TAX THAT INCREASES FROM 0.60 CT TO 0.30 CT PER MILLILITER OF E-LIQUID
If this is not exceptional either, the e-cigarette has still obtained a tax relief in the State Budget for 2017. The initial proposal, delivered by the Government, provided that the tax be 0.618 euros for each milliliter of e-liquid. For their part, the Socialists have proposed a modification so that this tax increases to 0.3 euros per milliliter or 50% of the initial tax.
To explain their proposal the Socialists declared " that it is scientifically proven that electronic cigarettes are much less harmful than conventional cigarettes for the health of smokers and non-smokers. They also recall that "the cause of death of smokers is indeed smoke and not nicotine".
In Business, the party spokesman, Joao Galamba, explained that the costs associated with this tax reduction " were derisory or even null because many vapers had stopped buying their e-liquids in Portugal ". With this tax, many shops have closed in Portugal, maybe this relief will at least stabilize a little the e-cigarette market in the country.
