JAMAICA: Dr. Baker says electronic cigarettes are dangerous.

As Jamaican smokers increasingly turn to e-cigarettes, Dr. Terry Baker wanted to issue a warning stating that these were dangerous and should be avoided.

« THE E-CIGARETTE NOT SO INOFFENSIVE AS THAT!«

There are some countries that we don't talk about much but where the electronic cigarette market is also developing and this is the case of Jamaica. As more and more Jamaican smokers turn to this solution to end smoking, the Dr. Terry Baker, Senior Medical Officer (OMU) of the National Chest Hospital issued a warning presenting the e-cigarette as " dangerous

According to Dr Baker, although e-cigarettes are being touted as a safer alternative to tobacco, the dangers are still significant. While acknowledging that some of her colleagues have not yet drawn their conclusions, she says she is among those who are convinced that the product is harmful.

« We think she's not as harmless as people want to tell us“, She said, stressing that some substances used in the manufacture of electronic cigarettes are harmful to humans and that the vapors produced are not standardized. .

According to her " You run the risk of inhaling a myriad of substances that will pass through your lungs. At the present time, it is not possible to determine with precision what will enter the body or the lungs.  »

Dr Baker said that although electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they do contain other substances that have been shown to be toxic, such as nicotine, which is highly addictive. According to SMO, some of the flavors used to make electronic cigarettes attractive are also known to cause lung disease. She points out that some electronic cigarettes even contain formaldehyde, which is used as a preservative or embalming agent.

Dr Baker said that in some places the United States regulated the use of electronic cigarettes in the same way as smoking.

« They have prevented sale to minors and are seeking to put health warnings on packaging as with tobacco. As research on the electronic cigarette continues, it can be said that it is by no means harmless.“, She declared.
